A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure in dental implantology used to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, particularly in the area of the premolars and molars. This procedure is often necessary when there isn’t sufficient bone height in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw, for dental implant placement. Here’s an overview of the sinus lift procedure:
Indications for a Sinus Lift
Insufficient Bone Height: Due to bone resorption following tooth loss or periodontal disease.
Close Proximity of Sinuses: The maxillary sinuses may be too close to the jaw for implants to be placed safely.
The Sinus Lift Procedure
Pre-Surgical Assessment: Includes dental X-rays or a CT scan to evaluate the anatomy of your jaw and sinuses.
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, but sedation or general anesthesia may be used depending on patient comfort and the complexity of the procedure.
Surgical Access: An incision is made in the gum tissue where the back teeth used to be. The tissue is raised, exposing the bone underneath.
Lifting the Sinus Membrane: A small, oval window is opened in the bone, and the membrane lining the sinus on the other side of the window is gently pushed upward.
Bone Grafting Material: The space underneath the lifted sinus membrane is filled with a bone grafting material. The material can be taken from your own body (autogenous bone), from a cadaver (allogenic bone), from cow bone (xenograft), or can be a synthetic material.
The gum tissue is stitched back into place.
Recovery and Healing
Healing Time: The healing process can take several months as the bone graft must integrate with the patient’s bone. After healing, dental implants can be placed.
Postoperative Care: May include pain relievers, antibiotics, and an antimicrobial mouthwash. Instructions will be given on diet and oral hygiene practices during the healing period.
Follow-up Appointments: To monitor the healing process and determine when implants can be placed.
Risks and Considerations
A risk during surgery, which can usually be repaired at the time of the procedure.
Postoperative Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection.
Graft Failure: Rarely, the bone graft may not integrate well, necessitating further treatment.
A sinus lift is a common and generally safe procedure that can make dental implants possible for patients who otherwise wouldn’t be candidates due to insufficient bone in the upper jaw. It’s important to have a thorough consultation with a qualified dental specialist to understand the procedure, associated risks, and aftercare requirements.
