Fixing dental prostheses

Fixing dental prostheses refers to the process of attaching artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth to improve function and aesthetics. These prostheses can include crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants. The method of fixation depends on the type of prosthesis and the specific needs of the patient. Here’s an overview of the common types of dental prostheses and how they are fixed:

Crowns
Description: A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance.
Fixation: Crowns are cemented onto an existing tooth or implant. The tooth is first prepared by removing a portion of the enamel, then an impression is made, and a crown is crafted in a lab to precisely fit the tooth.
Bridges
Description: Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth by spanning the space where the teeth are missing.
Fixation: Bridges are anchored to the natural teeth or implants next to the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as supports for the bridge.

Types: There are full dentures (replacing all teeth) and partial dentures (replacing some teeth).
Fixation:
Full Dentures: These rest on the gums and are held in place by suction and/or the use of adhesives.
Partial Dentures: They are held in place by clasps and rests that are carefully fitted around the natural teeth.

Description: Implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gums to replace the root portion of a missing tooth.
Fixation: After the implant integrates with the bone, a replacement tooth (crown) is mounted onto the implant. For multiple teeth, implants can support a bridge or denture.

Description: These are an alternative to traditional dentures, designed to fit over the remaining natural teeth or dental implants.
Fixation: They can be anchored to dental implants or natural teeth that have been prepared (crowned) to accept the overdenture.

Description: Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite material that cover the front surface of teeth.
Fixation: They are bonded to the front of the teeth, requiring a small amount of enamel to be removed to accommodate the veneer.
Inlays and Onlays
Description: Used for moderate tooth decay or damage, inlays and onlays are custom-made fillings made of composite material, gold, or tooth-

Fixation: Inlays fit within the top edges of the tooth, while onlays cover one or more cusps. They are bonded into place.
Each type of dental prosthesis requires careful consideration of the patient’s specific dental needs, oral health status, and aesthetic desires. Regular dental check-ups are crucial for maintaining the health and longevity of these prostheses. Additionally, good oral hygiene practices are essential to ensure the longevity of both the prostheses and the remaining natural teeth
