Dental prostheses

Dental prostheses are artificial devices used to replace missing teeth and restore function and aesthetics to a person’s mouth. These devices are a crucial aspect of dental services, offering solutions for various dental conditions. Key types of dental prostheses and associated services include:

Dental Crowns: Crowns are caps that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth. They restore the shape, size, strength, and appearance of the tooth. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or composite resin.

Dental Bridges: Bridges are used to fill gaps left by one or more missing teeth. They consist of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth in between. Bridges can be supported by natural teeth or implants.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are two types of dentures – complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Dental Implants: Implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. They involve surgically inserting a metal post or frame into the jawbone, onto which a replacement tooth or bridge is mounted.

Implant-Supported Bridges and Dentures: These are similar to regular bridges and dentures but are anchored on dental implants instead of natural teeth. This provides a more stable and secure fit.

Although not a replacement for missing teeth, veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. They are often used for teeth that are discolored, chipped, misaligned, or have gaps.

Onlays and Inlays: These are indirect fillings made of porcelain, gold, or composite materials used to repair moderately decayed or damaged teeth. Onlays cover one or more cusps of the tooth, while inlays fit within the cusps.

The process of getting dental prostheses typically involves several steps, including consultation, preparation (which may involve impressions of the mouth), fabrication of the prosthesis, and fitting. Regular follow-ups and maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of these devices. Dental prostheses not only help in restoring oral functions like chewing and speaking but also play a significant role in improving overall facial aesthetics and boosting self-confidence.
